Why is my site showing a generic icon in Google and browser tabs?
When no favicon is declared, browsers draw a blank page glyph in the tab and Google omits your logo from the search result. A favicon is a small branding asset, but it is also a trust signal at the exact moment a user decides where to click. The fix is one link element in the head plus an icon that meets Google's size rules.
Why this matters
MDN describes the icon link relation as a resource that represents the current document in the user interface, and it notes the favicon is the most common use. Google will include a favicon in search results if your site provides one and the page can be crawled, and its guidelines require the icon to be square with a 1:1 aspect ratio, at least 8x8 pixels. Google recommends going larger than 48x48 so the icon holds up across surfaces, and it accepts BMP, GIF, ICO, PNG, JPEG, PPM, and TIFF. Without a declared icon, tabs show a generic document glyph, bookmarks look untrustworthy, and search results are slightly less distinctive. None of that throws an error, so the defect persists indefinitely. A favicon also appears in browser bookmarks, pinned tabs, and mobile home-screen shortcuts, so a missing icon is visible far beyond the search page.
How to fix it
Declare the icon with rel="icon" and point it at a square asset. Add an apple-touch-icon link for iOS home-screen bookmarks, since Apple uses its own non-standard relation rather than rel="icon".
<head>
<link rel="icon" href="/favicon.ico">
<link rel="icon" type="image/png" sizes="48x48" href="/favicon-48x48.png">
<link rel="apple-touch-icon" href="/apple-touch-icon.png">
</head>
MDN warns that the historically common shortcut token before icon is non-conforming, ignored, and must not be used any more, so drop it. Apple's documentation notes it looks for a PNG named apple-touch-icon.png in the site root if no link is given, but declaring the link is clearer and lets you supply multiple resolutions with the sizes attribute. Google supports icon and the historical shortcut icon, as well as apple-touch-icon, and it stores only one favicon per hostname, so choose an asset that represents the whole site.
How to verify the fix
Confirm the browser can fetch the icon and that the markup points to it. The command below checks the response status and content type of the conventional ICO path.
curl -sI https://example.com/favicon.ico
curl -s https://example.com | grep -i 'rel="icon"'
A healthy icon returns 200 with an image content type, and the second command should print your link element. Google may take days to weeks to pick up a new favicon after it recrawls the home page, so a stale placeholder can linger. If you replace an existing icon, keep its URL stable, because Google's guidance notes that frequently changing the favicon path slows down how quickly the new asset is picked up.
Automated check
The Auditor reports no favicon declared as a Low-severity finding. It checks the head and the well-known root path for a favicon reference and flags pages that provide none. It reports the absence and the URL; designing the icon itself is up to you.
